Το Εργαστήριο Εξερευνητικής Γεωφυσικής ιδρύθηκε το 2002 υπό το Τμ. Γεωφυσικής της Γεωλογικής Σχολής, Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης, Ελλάδα. Το Εργαστήριο είναι υπεύθυνο για 7 προπτυχιακά και 9 μεταπτυχιακά μαθήματα. Το προσωπικό του Τμήματος περιλαμβάνει 5 ακαδημαϊκούς, 2 τεχνικά και διοικητικά μέλη και περισσότερους από 10 ερευνητές.
Τα μέλη του Εργαστηρίου έχουν μακρά εμπειρία ερευνητικών και συμβουλευτικών δραστηριοτήτων, τόσο σε εθνικό όσο και σε διεθνές επίπεδο. Οι κύριες ερευνητικές δραστηριότητες περιλαμβάνουν Εφαρμοσμένη Γεωφυσική στην Υδρογεωλογική και Μηχανική Πρακτική, Εφαρμοσμένη Γεωφυσική στην Ανίχνευση Κοιτασμάτων Μεταλλεύματος, Γεωφυσική Ανίχνευση και χαρτογράφηση κρυφών αρχαιοτήτων, Απόκτηση δεδομένων δυναμικού πεδίου, επεξεργασία και ερμηνεία, αρχαιομαγνητισμός με βάση την ανάπτυξη επεξεργασίας και αντιστροφής. δεδομένα.
Πάνω από το 30% των ερευνητικών κεφαλαίων του Εργαστηρίου προέρχονται από ανταγωνιστικά προγράμματα της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής. Μέλη του Εργαστηρίου. Έχουν συμμετάσχει σε περισσότερα από 15 ερευνητικά προγράμματα της ΕΕ από το 1987, ενώ 5 ευρωπαϊκά έργα έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί από το Εργαστήριο. από την ίδρυσή της το 2002.
Τα μέλη του Εργαστηρίου έχουν βραβευτεί με πολλές διεθνείς διακρίσεις μεταξύ των οποίων οι καλύτερες ετήσιες εργασίες (1997) και οι καλύτερες εργασίες σε διεθνή συνέδρια (δύο ανακοινώσεις το 2007).
Το Εργαστήριο διεξάγει υψηλού επιπέδου έρευνα και διδασκαλία πάνω στη Γεωφυσική Εξερεύνησης. Επίσης, παρέχει υπηρεσίες εφαρμόζοντας μεθόδους Γεωφυσικής Έρευνας για διάφορους σκοπούς.
Το εργαστήριο έχει ισχυρό ιστορικό σε μεγάλα βασικά ερευνητικά έργα για την ανάπτυξη των μεθόδων γεωφυσικής αναζήτησης. Τα κύρια ενδιαφέροντα είναι στον τομέα της ανάπτυξης και ενίσχυσης τεχνικών αναστροφής για την απεικόνιση του υπεδάφους χρησιμοποιώντας διάφορα είδη γεωφυσικών δεδομένων. Άλλα ενδιαφέροντα περιλαμβάνουν θεωρία και πρακτική δυνητικών πεδίων, επεξεργασία και ερμηνεία γεωφυσικών σημάτων, επεξεργασία εικόνας και σύντηξη εικόνας, κατασκευή καμπυλών αρχαιοέντασης για τη Βαλκανική χερσόνησο, ανάπτυξη μεθόδων και οργάνων για ταχεία απόκτηση δεδομένων για αρχαιολογική έρευνα και μελέτες δομής φλοιού στη Νοτιοανατολική Ευρώπη.
Επίσης, έχουμε πραγματοποιήσει περισσότερες από 400 έρευνες στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό για διάφορους σκοπούς. Ο μεγάλος όγκος αυτών των ερευνών είχε ως στόχο να δώσει στοιχεία στο πλαίσιο υδρογεωλογικών, μηχανολογικών και αρχαιολογικών έργων. Επίσης, αναλήφθηκαν έργα περιφερειακής κλίμακας για μελέτες γεωθερμίας, εξόρυξης και δομής λεκανών. Το εργαστήριο έχει συντάξει τον αερομαγνητικό χάρτη της Μακεδονίας και της Θράκης και επεξεργάστηκε επίσης τα βαρυτικά και μαγνητικά δεδομένα της Αλβανίας.
1976
Το Εργαστήριο Γεωφυσικής και Σεισμολογίας του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης ιδρύθηκε μαζί με την Έδρα Γεωφυσικής. Πρώτος διευθυντής του Εργαστηρίου ήταν ο καθ. π.Χ. Παπαζάχος
1978
Ο Σεισμολογικός Σταθμός Α.Υ.Θ. ιδρύθηκε. Ανήκει στο Τμήμα Γεωφυσικής. Διοικητικός υπεύθυνος του σεισμολογικού σταθμού είναι ο διευθυντής του Τμήματος Γεωφυσικής
1983
Ιδρύθηκε το Τμήμα Γεωφυσικής και Γεωτεκτονικής και ιδρύθηκε το Εργαστήριο Γεωφυσικής. Πρώτος διευθυντής του Τμήματος ήταν ο καθ. π.Χ. Παπαζάχος
1984
Το Τμήμα μετατράπηκε σε Τμήμα Γεωφυσικής και διατηρεί το όνομα αυτό μέχρι σήμερα
2002
Ιδρύθηκε το Εργαστήριο Εφαρμοσμένης Γεωφυσικής. Είναι το δεύτερο Εργαστήριο του Τμήματος. Πρώτος διευθυντής του Εργαστηρίου ήταν ο καθ. Δ. Κοντοπούλου

- Ο Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής (σήμερα) Π. Τσουρλός ήταν ο αποδέκτης του βραβείου του Πανεπιστημίου του York “K.M. Stott” για διακεκριμένο μεταπτυχιακό ερευνητικό έργο, για το έτος 1993-1994.

Η γεωφυσική αναζήτηση χρησιμοποιείται ευρέως σε όλο τον κόσμο για τον εντοπισμό και τη χαρτογράφηση θαμμένων αρχαίων υπολειμμάτων. Αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος της αρχαιολογικής έρευνας και αναφέρεται σε οποιοδήποτε εισαγωγικό βιβλίο για τις επιτόπιες αρχαιολογικές μεθόδους. Πρακτικά αποτελείται από ένα σύνολο διαφορετικών τεχνικών που βασίζονται όλες στις διαφορετικές φυσικές ιδιότητες που παρουσιάζουν οι αρχαιότητες σε σχέση με το περιβάλλον στο οποίο φιλοξενούνται. Περαιτέρω, έχουν αναπτυχθεί τεχνικές επεξεργασίας και ερμηνείας αυτών των ανωμαλιών που επιτρέπουν την εκτίμηση της ταυτότητας, των διαστάσεων και του βάθους ταφής των υπόγειων δομών.
Είναι δυνατό, υπό ευνοϊκές συνθήκες. για να αποκτήσει τελικά μια εικόνα που μοιάζει με το αποτέλεσμα που θα είχε σχεδιαστεί αν είχε γίνει ανασκαφή. Ένα παράδειγμα δίνεται στο σχήμα (1) όπου η επίπεδη όψη των θαμμένων αρχαίων λειψάνων αναγνωρίζεται εύκολα. Το συγκεκριμένο παράδειγμα είναι από την τοποθεσία που φιλοξενεί τα ερείπια της αρχαίας Ευρώπης στο Νομό Κιλκίς (Περιφέρεια Μακεδονίας, Βόρεια Ελλάδα). Είναι αμέσως φανερό ότι στον χάρτη αυτό αποκαλύπτεται το αρχαίο πολεοδομικό συγκρότημα. Η χρήση εικόνων, όπως αυτή του παραδείγματος, είναι πολύτιμη για την αρχαιολογική έρευνα: Η ανασκαφή μπορεί να σχεδιαστεί καλύτερα και να κατευθυνθεί προς συγκεκριμένους στόχους. Συμπεράσματα μπορούν να συναχθούν με βάση τα ευρήματα των αρχαιολογικών τάφρων και τις τελικές γεωφυσικές εικόνες.
Εικ. 1. Τα αρχαία ερείπια περιλαμβάνουν ανθιστικές κατασκευές θαμμένες σε ένα σχετικά αγώγιμο περιβάλλον. Έτσι δημιουργούν ανωμαλίες υψηλής αντοχής οι οποίες χαρτογραφούνται με γεωφυσική αναζήτηση. Στο συγκεκριμένο παράδειγμα που φαίνεται σε αυτό το σχήμα, έχει χαρτογραφηθεί η υποεπιφανειακή αντίσταση και η κατανομή της απεικονίζεται σε κλίμακα του γκρι. Οι πιο σκούροι τόνοι υποδεικνύουν περιοχές υψηλής αντίστασης που προφανώς προκαλούνται από τα κρυμμένα αρχαία ερείπια. Το παράδειγμα αντλήθηκε από την εξερεύνηση του χώρου που φιλοξενεί τα ερείπια της αρχαίας πόλης «Ευρώπος» στη Β. Ελλάδα[1]. Οι κλειστές ορθογώνιες ανωμαλίες που αντικατοπτρίζουν την παρουσία υπολειμμάτων τοίχων θεμελίωσης σχηματίζουν μια επίπεδη όψη που δείχνει λίγο πολύ το σχήμα του αρχαίου πολεοδομικού συγκροτήματος.
Η εφαρμογή της γεωφυσικής αναζήτησης είναι οικονομικά αποδοτική και χρονικά, καθώς μεγάλες εκτάσεις καλύπτονται με γρήγορο και αξιόπιστο τρόπο. Περαιτέρω, λόγω της σχετικής νομοθεσίας στις περισσότερες Ευρωπαϊκές Χώρες, οι γεωφυσικές εικόνες αποτελούν στοιχεία για την παρουσία κρυμμένων αρχαιοτήτων. Ως εκ τούτου, μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν ακόμη και στα δικαστήρια για την υποστήριξη υποθέσεων απαλλοτριώσεων γης. Ο σχετικός ελληνικός νόμος δημοσιεύτηκε στο ΦΕΚ 153, 28/6/2002.
Το Εργαστήριο Γεωφυσικής Εξερεύνησης. του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, με επικεφαλής τον καθηγητή Γρηγόριο Ν. Τσόκα, έχει πραγματοποιήσει περισσότερες από 250 έρευνες στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Μεταξύ των θέσεων που ερευνήθηκαν περιλαμβάνονται οι Αιγές (Βεργίνα), Δίον, Ευρώπη, Μήτρου, Σαμοθράκη, Ήλιδα, Μαραθώνας, Σαντορίνη, το κέντρο της Αθήνας, η Ακρόπολη Αθηνών, η Σπάρτη, η αρχαία Τενέα, η Θήβα κ.λπ. Επίσης, έχουν εξερευνηθεί τοποθεσίες σε Ιταλία, Ισπανία, Αίγυπτο, Ρωσία, Κουβέιτ, Ιορδανία και Κύπρο. Περαιτέρω, τα μέλη του Exploration Geophysics Lab. έχουν συμμετάσχει σε μεγάλα βασικά ερευνητικά προγράμματα για την ανάπτυξη της αρχαιολογικής έρευνας. Αυτό φαίνεται εύκολα από τον αριθμό των δημοσιεύσεων στα σχετικά διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά.
