He was born in Karditsa, Central Greece , in 1957. He graduated the secondary School in 1975 and entered University in 1976 and he enrolled in the first year of studies of the School of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, ( Greece ) and he graduated in 1981. He participated in the research activities and projects of the Laboratory of Geophysics from the beginning of 1979 until June 1982.

He submitted his dissertation under the title “ Travel time curves and crustal structure in the Southern Balkan region” in August 1984 and he was awarded the title of Doctor in November 1984.

He worked as a r esearch a ssistant of the Laboratory of Geophysics from June 1982 until December 1984. He became Lecturer in May 1982, Assistant Professor in July 1990 and Associate Professor in November 1995 in the Department of Geophysics of the School of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Further Education

In the period of 3-17 August 1984 he visited the Laboratory of Geophysics and Tectonophysics in the University of Grenoble ( France ) and he worked on Geophysical subjects concerning his dissertation with Dr. D. Hatzfeld.

In the period between November 1994 and June 1995 he visited the School of Environmental Sciences of the University of East Anglia (UK) having an educational leave. During his staying there he collaborated with Dr. P. Burton on subjects concerning the crustal structure, using surface waves analysis.

Research and Social Activities

As a researcher of the Laboratory of Geophysics of the Aristotle University , he worked on a broad area of seismological subjects. His research interests are summarised as following:

a) Study of the seismic sequences of the strong earthquakes of Greece

b) Study of the crustal structure by the method of the residuals of the travel times

c) Study of the shallow crust based on the dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves

d) Study of the seismotectonic features of the broader area of Aegean Sea

e) Study of the microseismicity based on the data of portable seismographs

f) Study of the Long Term earthquake prediction

Up to day he participated in many research projects and conferences in Greece as well as abroad, in Organizing Committees of 3 Greek conferences as well as of the International Assembly of IASPEI-1997.

He is a member of :

a) Greek Geologists Association

b) Greek Geophyists Association

c) Geological Society of Greece

d) Seismological Society of America

e)   American Geophysical Union
